Menzies Emerald Project
Advancing from Exploration to Market
Project Overview
The Menzies Emerald Project is Gemstar’s flagship asset, located in Western Australia’s Eastern Goldfields. The Project is held through Gemstar’s wholly owned subsidiary, Australia Menzies Emerald Pty Ltd, on granted Mining Lease M30/8 covering approximately 92.6 hectares.
The Project is classified as an advanced exploration project. Emerald mineralisation is documented over approximately 1.9 km along the Mining Lease, and emerald discovery, exploration and small-scale mining at Menzies date back to the 1970s.
Granted mining tenure, established road access and existing site infrastructure provide a practical base for the next stage of exploration and project evaluation. Gemstar is pursuing a staged pathway combining exploration, technical evaluation, processing upgrades and project development.
Gemstar’s flagship emerald project in Western Australia’s Eastern Goldfields.
Held through wholly owned subsidiary Australia Menzies Emerald Pty Ltd.
Granted mining tenure, road access and an existing camp and processing plant.
Emeralds first reported from the Project area in 1974.
Prime Location in the Eastern Goldfields
- Approximately 43 km west of Menzies, 150 km NNW of Kalgoorlie and 520 km NE of Perth.
- Located within the North Coolgardie Mineral Field, in the Shire of Menzies.
- Accessible via the Goldfields Highway and the Menzies–Riverina and Riverina–Snake Hill road network, which runs through the Project area.
- Kalgoorlie provides the principal regional centre for supplies, services and mining support.
- The Project area is historically also referred to as the “Wonder Well” or “Riverina” emerald deposit.
Project Status
M30/8, covering 92.565 ha, held by Australia Menzies Emerald Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gemstar Resources Ltd.
An extension / renewal application for a further 21 years has been lodged, with the Native Title Right to Negotiate process currently underway.
The Project is currently on care and maintenance, with a transportable camp and small processing plant on site.
Advanced exploration project. No Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve has been estimated for the Project.
Historical Emerald Discovery & Production
Discovery & Early Work
Emeralds were first reported from the Menzies Project area in 1974, during construction of the Riverina to Snake Hill Road. Subsequent small-scale mining and exploration was undertaken by a number of operators, with historical workings generally shallow and focused on exposed emerald-bearing mica schist and pegmatite zones.
Historical Production
Historical records report approximately 66,000 carats of facet-grade emerald production from the Project area. Production was derived predominantly from shallow workings, generally within approximately 5 m of surface, providing important evidence of emerald occurrence and recoverability, while not being indicative of future production.
Exploration Legacy
Historical trenching, mapping and drilling by North Kalgurli Mines (1979–1982) identified a number of emerald-bearing mica schist “shoots”, with drilling indicating selected shoots continue to depths of approximately 20–35 m. This work provides an important geological foundation for Gemstar’s current exploration program.
Historical production and grade information is provided for historical and geological context only and should not be regarded as indicative of future exploration results, recoveries, production, grades or project economics.
Project Access & Existing Infrastructure
The Menzies Emerald Project benefits from established road access and existing site infrastructure, providing a practical base for the next stage of exploration and project evaluation.
- Existing 8-person camp with accommodation, kitchen, laundry and power facilities
- Small processing plant with loading bin, conveyor, drum scrubber and hand-sorting facilities
- Company-owned Cat IT28F integrated tool carrier
- Kalgoorlie, approximately 150 km away, serves as the principal regional centre
